The Simpsons just name-checked Charlie Brown when Homer was so depressed his mouth turned into a squiggle. That was the thing about Schulz; he made both his content and form at once as expressive and as spare as it could be -- in fact its spareness is probably what unveils the expression. He reminds me of those sculptors who said they were just revealing the form already in the stone, except his stone was pen and paper.
