WEEEEEE -- that was fun!

I need to watch the full scene again, but something I noticed from your screen grabs: it's not just the characters who are decapitated, it's also the room. Each time the camera shifts away from a Fellowship member to someplace else in the mise-en-scene, it tends to focus on a doorway or some passage, and the top of that passageway is similarly decapitated.

Not sure what that would suggest, beyond the head being an entrance into the interior of the character and the passageways being entrances into the interior of the mine -- entrances to interiors being cut off?

But then when Jackson trips us, and we get to see the characters' full heads, we also get to see more of the walls and the ceiling, including the full doorways.

Like I said, I'd need to see the full scene again to know for sure, but from the screengrabs, this seems to be the case.
